What it is

Dog walking is paid pet care: you collect a client's dog, walk it for a set window (usually 30 minutes), and return it, logging the walk with photos and a GPS map. Most people start on a marketplace app that supplies the clients and takes a cut of each booking, then gradually move repeat clients off-platform to keep the full fee. It is physical, weather-exposed, schedule-bound work concentrated in the midday hours when owners are at work.

How it works

  1. Pick a marketplace to start on
Rover and Wag supply the client demand you do not have yet. You set your own rate on Rover; the platform keeps a service fee from every booking.
  2. Apply and pass the background check
Rover requires you to be at least 18, submit a profile, and clear a background check run by First Advantage covering criminal history and driving record. Rover charges a profile review fee at sign-up.
  3. Wait out the profile review
Rover's sitter team reviews new profiles in roughly 5 to 10 business days, and background checks do not start until the profile is approved, so budget two to four weeks before you are live.
  4. Price for your city and set a tight service radius
Unpaid travel between walks is what destroys the effective hourly rate, so keep clients clustered in a few walkable blocks rather than taking every request across town.
  5. Buy liability insurance before your first paid walk
Marketplace guarantees are limited and do not make you a covered business. A membership policy through an outfit like Pet Sitters Associates covers dog walking in the client's home.
  6. Turn one-off bookings into a recurring midday route
The money is in the same four or five dogs walked every weekday, not in a stream of new clients. Ask for a standing weekly slot after the first successful walk.
  7. Move repeat clients direct and run your own scheduling
Once you have a steady book, scheduling and invoicing software replaces the platform. This is also where the real affiliate money in this niche sits.

What you need

The gear

Hands-free bungee waist leash
Clips around the waist so both hands stay free while leading a dog, which is what makes walking two or three dogs at once possible. Bungee versions absorb lunging.
Dog walking belt bag or fanny pack
Carries treats, keys, phone, waste bags and a collapsible bowl in one place with D-rings for leash clips, so nothing has to be set down on the pavement.
Waste bags and a leash-mounted dispenser
The one genuinely non-optional consumable. Dispensers clip to the leash so bags are reachable one-handed.
Treat pouch with a secure closure
Fast one-handed treat access for recall and reward, with a closure that will not spill when you bend down to clean up.
Spare slip lead
Backup control if a client's collar or harness fails mid-walk, and for handling a dog that slips its own gear.
Collapsible water bowl
Water is heavy to carry for several dogs; a packable bowl lets you use taps and fountains on longer park walks.
Pet first-aid kit
Cuts, paw injuries and insect stings happen on walks, and you are responsible for the animal until it is home.
Reflective vest and headlamp
Winter walks run in the dark at both ends of the day, and visibility is a road-safety requirement for you and the dog.
Dog wipes and a towel
Returning a muddy dog to a client's clean house is the fastest way to lose a recurring booking.

The catch

The published hourly figures are for paid walk time only, and almost nobody fills a working day with back-to-back paid walks. Demand is crushed into the 11am-3pm window when owners are at work, so a walker is paid for perhaps three or four hours of a day they cannot use for anything else, and unpaid travel between clients plus Rover's 20% cut both come straight off the top. It is also real liability: you are holding a leash attached to an animal that can bite a stranger or run into traffic, which is why insurance is a cost of doing business rather than an optional extra, and bad weather does not cancel a booking.
