Make Money with your Car
Your car can earn in four different ways — renting it out, driving deliveries or rideshare, carrying paid advertising wraps, or selling it outright — and each pays a different amount for a different amount of your time.

What it is
This is an umbrella for any way a privately owned vehicle generates income: listing it on a peer-to-peer rental marketplace like Turo, driving it for delivery or rideshare platforms like Amazon Flex, Instacart and DoorDash, renting its bodywork to an advertiser through Carvertise or Wrapify, or cashing it out through a buyer like Peddle. Renting and advertising are closer to passive income; delivery and rideshare pay more per month but are straightforward hourly work. Every published figure in this niche is gross revenue — fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation come out of your side, not the platform's.
How it works
- Pick the route that matches your car and your timeA newer, desirable car with low personal mileage suits renting it out on Turo. A paid-off reliable car and free evenings suit delivery. A high-mileage commuter car in a city suits an advertising wrap, which pays for miles you were already driving.
- Check your insurance before you earn a dollarPersonal auto policies commonly exclude commercial and for-hire use. Platforms provide their own protection during active trips or deliveries, but the gaps between are yours. Call your insurer and ask specifically about the route you picked.
- Sign up and clear the vehicle screenEach platform screens the car as well as the driver. Carvertise requires a 2015-or-newer vehicle with no significant dents or scratches and excludes some models outright. Amazon Flex requires you to be 21 or older with a valid license, a qualifying vehicle and a smartphone.
- Run it for a full month before you judge itAdvertising campaigns are market-dependent and may not be running near you at all; Carvertise's base campaign pay is $100 per month with anything above that announced per campaign in the app. Rental bookings and delivery demand are both seasonal.
- Track mileage and costs from day oneMileage is the single biggest deduction available on this income and it is unrecoverable if you did not log it. Keep a per-trip mileage record and separate the car's fuel and maintenance spend from household spending.
- Wait out the first payout cycleMoney does not arrive the same day. On Turo, payout for your first completed trip is initiated three business days after the trip ends, and the bank then takes three to five business days.
- Stack a second route only if the first one worksA wrap pays for miles you drive anyway, so it layers cleanly on top of delivery driving. Renting the car out does not layer with anything, because the car has to be available.
What you need
- A vehicle you own or control, with permission from any lienholder to use it commercially
- A valid driver's licence and a clean enough record to pass a platform background check
- For Amazon Flex specifically: age 21 or older, a valid licence, a qualifying vehicle and a smartphone
- For a Carvertise wrap: a 2015-or-newer vehicle with no significant dents, dings or scratches
- An insurance conversation — personal policies commonly exclude commercial or for-hire use
- A bank account connected for direct deposit, and tolerance for a one-to-two-week first payout
- A smartphone and a mileage log, since mileage is the main deduction on this income
- Realistic view of your car's depreciation: every route adds miles and wear that are not deducted from the published earnings figures
The gear
The catch
Every number the platforms publish is gross revenue, and the costs that eat it — fuel, insurance, maintenance, tyres and depreciation — are not deducted from any of them. One independent breakdown turns a $1,200 gross Turo month into roughly $200-$500 of actual cash after the platform's cut and ordinary vehicle costs, and the measured median for Instacart shoppers is $12.21 an hour before gas. The advertising route looks like free money but is entirely dependent on a campaign existing in your market: Carvertise's base pay is $100 a month, and the $450-$1,500 figure applies to campaigns you may wait weeks or months to be offered. Platform risk is not theoretical either — Getaround and HyreCar, the two main US alternatives to Turo, shut down their US operations in February 2025, stranding the hosts who had built on them.
