What it is

A lawn service is a route business: you sign up a cluster of nearby homes and cut each one on a recurring weekly or biweekly schedule for a set price per visit. Revenue comes from how many lawns you can physically finish in a day and how close together they are. Most people start solo with a push mower, a trimmer and a blower, then add equipment once the route is dense enough to justify it.

How it works

  1. Price a route, not a lawn
Published guides put most residential mowing jobs in the $45–$95 per-visit range depending on lot size. Your income is that number times how many you can reach in a day, so driving time matters as much as price.
  2. Buy or borrow the minimum kit
A mower, string trimmer, edger and blower, plus a vehicle that can haul them. Several guides argue a lean start is possible near $500 if you already own basic tools, and suggest renting before buying.
  3. Register and insure the business
General liability runs roughly $400–$700 a year, and a local business license is commonly $50–$200. Mowing, trimming and edging usually needs no special license, but applying fertilizer or weed control does.
  4. Get the first jobs through an app
LawnStarter, Lawn Love and GreenPal all let you apply free and send you local jobs; they take a commission off each completed job instead of charging for leads. Lawn Love screens for the right equipment and at least a year of professional experience.
  5. Convert app customers into direct customers
App jobs carry a commission forever, so the margin case is to use them to fill empty slots and build density, then win neighbours directly through signage, door hangers and referrals.
  6. Tighten the route before adding equipment
Upgrading to a commercial walk-behind or a trailer only pays once you have enough lawns within a short drive. Fuel, repairs and windshield time are what kill thin routes.

What you need

The gear

Self-propelled walk-behind mower (21 in.)
The core tool; self-propelled saves the legs across a full day of lawns and handles slopes a push mower stalls on.
String trimmer / weed eater
Cuts what the mower cannot reach — fence lines, around trees, along beds. Platforms treat it as part of the required kit.
Stick edger
Cuts the clean line along driveways and sidewalks that makes a job look professional and justifies the higher end of the price range.
Backpack leaf blower
Clearing clippings off hard surfaces is the finishing step customers judge you on, and it is the main autumn upsell.
Fuel cans and 2-cycle oil mix
Gas equipment needs correctly mixed fuel on hand; running out mid-route costs a whole afternoon.
Utility trailer or truck ramps
Hauling a mower plus handhelds between houses. Route density is the income driver, so loading time is real money.
Hearing protection, eye protection and gloves
Required PPE for all-day small-engine work, and the cheapest insurance against injury.
Spare blades and a sharpener
Dull blades tear grass and slow you down; swapping blades mid-season is routine maintenance, not an upgrade.

The catch

The per-visit price looks good until you subtract the drive between houses: income is set by route density, not by your hourly rate, and a scattered route can halve your effective pay. It is also seasonal — most of the US has roughly a 30-week cutting season, so annual income is well below 52 weeks of the weekly figure, and the BLS median for this work is $38,470, not six figures. The apps that hand you your first customers keep a commission on those jobs indefinitely and, in GreenPal's case, put you in an open bidding war against every other vendor in your zip code, so the margin only improves once you convert app customers into direct ones.
