Get Paid to Take Surveys
Join market research panels and get paid small amounts per completed survey, with much higher rates on the research-interview platforms that sit above the consumer panels.

What it is
Market research companies pay ordinary people to answer questionnaires about products, media and politics, then sell the aggregated data to brands. At the consumer-panel end (Survey Junkie, Branded Surveys, Swagbucks) you earn points worth roughly a cent each for 5-20 minute surveys. A tier above that, academic and UX research platforms (Prolific, User Interviews, Respondent) pay cash at enforced or recommended hourly rates that are many times higher, but have far fewer slots and screen harder.
How it works
- Sign up on three or four panels at onceNo single panel sends enough work to be worth checking daily. Register free on a mix of consumer panels and research platforms so there is usually something open.
- Fill in every profile questionnairePanels match you to studies from your demographic and household profile, so an empty profile means almost no invitations. Survey Junkie also pays a small bonus for completing them — 170 points, about $1.70, including the email confirmation.
- Answer the pre-screening questions and expect to be turned awayMost surveys open with a few minutes of qualifying questions. If you don't fit the quota you are screened out, usually unpaid, and that lost time is the main drag on your real hourly rate.
- Prioritise the paid-per-hour research platformsProlific enforces a minimum of £6/$8 per hour and recommends £9/$12. User Interviews' own data recommends $40/hr for unmoderated tests and $80-$100/hr for moderated consumer sessions. One of these beats a week of consumer-panel surveys.
- Clear the cashout threshold, then withdrawSurvey Junkie and Branded Surveys both release money at 500 points ($5); Prolific pays out once your approved balance reaches £6/$6. Branded Surveys pays within three business days via PayPal, bank or gift card.
- Keep your answers consistentPanels run attention and consistency checks and will void submissions or close accounts that contradict an earlier profile. Straight-lining a survey to finish faster is the quickest way to lose the balance you have built.
What you need
- 18 or over, and resident in a supported country — Survey Junkie lists US, Canada, Australia and the UK
- An email address and a phone or computer; nothing else to buy
- A PayPal account for most cash payouts (Prolific pays only via PayPal)
- Patience for pre-screening questions that end in disqualification
- Honest, consistent profile answers — panels void work that fails their consistency checks
- For the better-paying moderated studies: a working webcam and microphone, and a real job title or specialism that screeners are recruiting for
The gear
The catch
The screen-outs are the business model. You answer five or ten minutes of qualifying questions, fail a quota you can't see, and get nothing for the time — which is why the per-survey rates of $0.40-$4 collapse into an effective wage of a few dollars an hour, below minimum wage almost everywhere. Survey Junkie says so on its own homepage: "You won't get rich taking surveys." The genuinely well-paid work — the $40-$100/hr moderated studies on Prolific, User Interviews and Respondent — is a different activity: you are applying for a scarce slot against hundreds of others, not clocking in, and months can pass between accepted studies. Money also sits in points behind a $5-$6 cashout wall, so the first withdrawal is days or weeks away.
