What it is
A set of apps that read your phone's or wearable's step count and pay you in points, coins or in-app currency that you later redeem for gift cards, PayPal cash or bank transfers. Most pay in cents per day and fund it by showing you ads, selling anonymised health data, or taking a cut of partner purchases. A second, separate tier of apps (HealthyWage, StepBet) pays real money but requires you to wager your own cash on hitting a step goal first.
How it works
- Pick two or three apps, not oneEach app caps what it pays per day, so stacking is the only way the numbers add up. Evidation, CashWalk, WeWard and Sweatcoin all run simultaneously off the same steps.
- Connect a step sourceLink Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit or Garmin. Several apps also need to stay running in the background or on the lock screen, and some use GPS, which means treadmill steps may not count.
- Collect daily, because points expireCashWalk coins expire if you don't tap to collect them, and Evidation points expire after 12 months of account inactivity. Missing days costs you the balance, not just the day.
- Do the surveys and 'cards', not just the stepsOn Evidation the step-tracking portion is capped at 100 points a day; the health surveys and cards pay more than the walking does.
- Wait out the redemption thresholdThresholds are set well above a casual user's monthly earnings: 3,000 CashWalk coins for $5, 10,000 Evidation points for $10, 3,000 Wards for about £15.
- Only then consider a wager appHealthyWage step challenges and StepBet games pay far more per event, but you post $40-$75 of your own money and forfeit it if your tracker misses a goal.
What you need
- A smartphone with Apple Health or Google Fit, or a wearable (Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch)
- Willingness to let apps run in the background, use GPS, and show ads
- Roughly 7,000-10,000 steps a day to hit most daily caps
- A PayPal account or bank details for cash-outs (several apps are gift-card only)
- Age 18+ and a US address for Evidation redemption
- Patience: one to five months of walking before the first redemption threshold is reached
- For the wager apps only: $40-$75 you can afford to lose
The gear
The catch
The arithmetic is the catch: at the rates two independent reviewers measured, a full 10,000 steps a day for a month earns about $5 per app, so you are being paid roughly 2 cents per thousand steps to watch ads, keep GPS on, and hand over health data. Redemption thresholds are deliberately set above a casual user's monthly total, points expire if you stop collecting or go inactive, and reviewers widely report step undercounting, forced ad pop-ups, lock-screen requirements and crashes — all of which reset your progress rather than just delay it. The apps that pay real money are not step trackers at all: HealthyWage and StepBet require you to wager $40-$75 of your own cash and keep it if a tracker glitch costs you a goal, which is gambling on your own hardware, not earning.
